As I set the hook on another walleye I glanced down at the graph to see I had just moved over the 16 foot shelf that I was working. I also glanced to the side to see I was only about 4 to 5 feet from the rock cliffs along the island. I kicked the power up on my Pinpoint and quickly the graph dropped to 40 feet in only a few yards. Anyone that has ever fished Canada knows the feeling of being that close to the rock cliffs and still be fishing in safe and protective spots.
Every time I'm there, I still marvel at almost touching the rock cliffs and still being on 10 to 15 feet of water. But the other thing that totally amazed me about this trip to Ontario was looking at the clock on the G.P.S. and seeing it was only 5:45 P.M. Considering my wife, Renee and I had left home at 5:00 A.M. that morning, checked in at the resort, unpacked, launched the boat and had four good walleyes and two northerns in the boat and we still had three hours of daylight left.
When people talk about fishing Canada most think of thousand mile drives, fishing out of rented boats and roughing it. Don't get me wrong, that's all a good time. But if an easy drive, fishing out of your own boat and ultra clean modern cabins appeal to you, then have I got a destination for you. Thunderbird Resort on Lac Des Mille Lacs Lake in Upsula, Ontario just 90 miles west of Thunder Bay. It's hard to describe the area without seeing a map of it. It is island after island of some of the most scenic, serene waters I have ever seen.
The fishing is nothing short of fantastic if northern pike and walleye are what you are after. You can fish whatever style you prefer or change it up and try a little bit of everything from live bait rigging, jigs, spinners, crankbaits or just toss out a slip bobber and sit back and enjoy the scenery. We had very good luck on Missouri River Tackle's Flexo jigs in the green and chartreuse colors. Tip these jigs with leeches and work the 14 to 16 foot shelves close to the islands.
For northern pike, spoons, jigs and Mepps spinners seem to trigger the pike wherever you happen to find them. Or just start tossing the spinners out and retrieving them. Believe me, the pike will find you. Oh, and don't forget to put that steel leader on or you will soon be tying on a new lure.
With all the islands and bays on this lake you will always be able to find a spot to get out of the wind if that is what you choose to do. Most important though, you do not ever have to worry about getting blown off the lake regardless of how small your boat happens to be. When you invest time and money into a fishing trip, you do not want to have to worry about not being able to be on the water.
When arriving at Thunderbird Resort, you will be greeted by the owners, Paul and Nancy Vollmar, who will give you a quick tour of the resort, check you in, and you will be fishing in no time. The cabins are well kept up, modern and very clean. There is a camp store where fishing licenses are sold, as well as a complete line of groceries and fishing tackle. Gas, oil and ice are available at the dock area, along with the cleanest fish cleaning area you will ever see. Boat and motor rental are also available along with live bait, including minnows, leeches and crawlers. A shaded camping area with water and electricity are also available. Paul also offers services to remote lakes.
If you are looking for a Canadian getaway with an east drive, only 400 to 500 miles from the Twin Cities, then we highly recommend Thunderbird Resort on Lac Des Mille Lacs Lake. It is a great place to show the whole family what Canada is all about. Give Paul and Nancy Vollmar a call and make some memories this summer for the whole family.
